What is Medigap?

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

Did you know that Medigap plans are also known as Medicare Supplement?  That's right!  These two terms are completely interchangeable.  If you didn't already know that, it can be a little confusing because some guides refer to them as Medigap and others refer to them as Medicare Supplements.  Sometimes you'll even find that one guide references both, which can make it look like they are different.

There are 11 Medigap / Medicare Supplement plans available:

  1. Plan A

Standardized Medigap Plans

In 2010, all of the Medigap / Medicare Supplement plans were standardized.  This means that no matter which carrier you choose, the plans of the same letter will have identical benefits.  And since all of the Medigap / Medicare Supplement plans pay according to Medicare's schedule, there's no question if your plan will pay or not.  If Medicare picks up, the Medigap / Medicare Supplement will pick up its share.

It's important to note that not all carriers offer every plan.  In fact, most carriers offer a limited number of those plans.  The most popular plans among our clients would be Plan F, High Deductible Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N.  There's a wide range of premiums between those plans, so there's a plan for just about every budget.
